What to look for in a grill brush

It’s important to keep your gas grill clean. A grill brush is an essential part of your grilling toolkit.

If you aren’t sure whether it’s time to replace your existing grill brush, check out our brief guide. When it’s time for you to buy a grill brush, look for one with these features:

  • Choose a grill brush with a long handle. A long handle allows you to be safely away from the grill while still enabling you to clean your grill grates while they’re warm. Grills are hot and get dirty. So it’s better to keep some distance!
  • Look for a grill brush with bristles that are deeply and firmly set into the brush. You do not want them to fall out!
  • Stay away from grill brushes that have bristle pads glued to the brush head. That glue can sometimes melt when exposed to heat.
  • Look for one with either wood or metal at the grill cleaning end, and try to avoid plastic, which can melt.
  • Brushes with bristles usually do a better job at cleaning, are less expensive, and tend to last longer. However, very occasionally, those bristles can come loose, might stick to your grill grates, and heaven forbid, become embedded in your grilled food.
  • Look for a grill brush with a scraper on the tool in addition the brush. A scraper is your go-to tool for removing stuck-on debris from your grill grates.
  • If your grill grates are made of cast iron, choose a grill brush that has brass bristles.
  • If your grill grates are made of stainless steel, choose a grill brush with stainless steel bristles.

After you buy your new grill brush, follow these tips for keeping your bristle-free or bristle grill brush itself clean and ready to use! If at all possible, we also recommend that you buy American and buy local with your grill brush and your gas grill!
